Tallahassee features a vibrant business community, year-round festivals, a multitude of interesting restaurants, and entertainment of all types. One Tallahassee industry that has grown exponentially in the last several years is craft beer. Craft beer isn’t just for chugging when the Noles make a touchdown or a blowout kegger with 100 of your best friends. It’s artisanal. It’s sophisticated. Brewers infuse barley and hops with spices and fruit and unexpected combinations to surprise and delight the craft connoisseur. Craft beer culture is deep and varied, with creativity and innovation driving its popularity across the country.
With comfy astroturfed beer gardens, charitable local events, live music, and inventive gastronomic offerings, there’s a lot to love about the local craft beer scene, so let’s explore Tallahassee’s five unique craft breweries.
Proof Brewing Company
Proof Brewing Company is the OG – Tallahassee’s first brewery – founded in 2012 by Byron and Angela Burroughs. Proof has dozens of awards under its belt, from Cigar City Brewing’s Hunaphu’s Day Festival to U.S. Open Beer Championship and Wine Enthusiast. Proof Brewing is the first female-owned brewery in North Florida and famously refurbished a decades-abandoned bottling plant on South Monroe, sparking an impressive series of revitalization projects in the neighborhood. Proof has a variety of interestingly innovative beers with bold flavors and fun names such as Disco Party, Flamingo Party, LaLa Land, and their signature North Florida area code namesake, EightFive-O.

Lake Tribe Brewing Company
Family-owned Lake Tribe Brewing Company was founded in 2016 by Jessie (son), Jason (son), Jordan (son), Laura (mom), and Connor Ross (dad). Lake Tribe’s outdoors-inspired beers draw from the tall bonfires, scenic campsites, and outdoor mess halls that made up their childhood. Popular brews include Long Paddle Lager, Red Cloud IPA, Old Chief IPA, and Beckster’s Satsuma Wheat.

Ology Brewing Co.
Ology was founded in 2017 by local middle school pals Paul Woodward, Brian Clark, and Nick Walker. What started as a passion for home brewing evolved into a fast-growing multi-location operation. Tallahassee has 3 Ology hotspots: Midtown, Northside, and Powermill, and in September 2022 opened its first location in Tampa. Not only do they make beer, but Ology also built Tallahassee’s first distillery for small-batch craft liquor. Ology Brewing is taproom-focused with seasonal selections of beers and sours as varied as the names that describe them. Some of Ology’s fantastically named (and tasty!) offerings are Sensory Overload, Fabricated Forest, Dadgarnet, Dynamic Fermentum, No Bake Shakeeee and Nectar of Immortality, just to name a few.

Their flagship beer is Hooter Brown which is an 8.5% ABV nutty brown ale.
