At Owen Title Company, we believe it is of the utmost importance to love where you live and support your local community. As such, we make it a point to frequently highlight local places in Tallahassee that deserve your attention, along with new developments in our community.
Bookworms Rejoice in Tallahassee
Outside of being Florida’s capital, Tallahassee is home to beautiful scenery and hidden gems for locals. While reading at home can be enjoyable, several spots within the city offer new, fun environments to read that book you have just been waiting to start.
From parks to coffee shops, there’s a wide range of places for every type of reader. We’ve selected a few of our favorite places to read in Tallahassee when you need to get out of the house and spend some time with your head in a book.
Black Dog Cafe
Black Dog Cafe is a local community coffee shop perched on the shores of Lake Ella. They have multiple single-origin and blended coffees to consume as well as a delightful assortment of pastries and snacks. The indoor seating area is cozy and quiet when the weather is blustery or cold. Or, for those with an affinity for vitamin D, the outdoor seating on the lake is quite literally a breath of fresh air when the weather permits. This is a great spot to bring your favorite book or a new one and dive into the pages. While you are there, you may even have some local-famous Lake Ella ducks waddle up for a bite of food.
Cascades Park
Cascades Park is located less than a mile from the Capitol Building and features an open-air amphitheater, dining options, and an enchanting environment to walk around and explore or sit down and people-watch. The park is full of greenery and benches and visitors are welcome to bring a blanket or relax right on the grass. Whether you want to sit in the stadium-style seats of the amphitheater or on the grass surrounding the water, there are plenty of options that will without a doubt offer great views and a peaceful reading environment.
Midtown Reader
Midtown Reader is a local independent bookstore with a refreshing ambiance and wonderful staff. You can bring a book from home or pick one up while you are there, then head upstairs to the Piebrary. The Piebrary is a new collaboration between Midtown Reader and TC Bakery, a minority-owned and women-led Tallahassee bakery, aimed at providing a new experience for customers (https://www.facebook.com/tcbakeryTlh). When you reach the top of the stairs, the smell of fresh baked sweets greets you in the quaint space filled with seating areas to enjoy a slice of pie or a sweet treat with fellow bookworms. Midtown Reader also has a children’s section downstairs with tons of books and a reading area if you would like to bring a kiddo on your journey.
Fat Cat Books
Fat Cat Books is a used book store, and a Railroad Square OG. If you are on the hunt for a new read and want the company of friendly adult adoptable cats, this is the spot for you. The books are all budget-friendly and you can donate some of your older books while you are there. For some cuddly cat time and many books to explore, Fat Cat Books is a lovely place to stop. You can even pick up a new book and find a welcoming spot in the great outdoor spaces within Railroad Square while you enjoy the art and weather.
We hope you visit these local haunts and find a new reading spot or two! What are your favorite bookworming hangouts in Tallahassee?
